Welcome to the Teaneck Public Schools!
Barbara Pinsak, Superintendent
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! I hope that your summer has been an enjoyable one and that you are ready to begin a productive new educational period. As is always the case, the school district does not shut down in the summer. Students with IEPs participated in an Extended School Year (ESY) program and our Title I grant again provided a Summer Mathematics and Literacy Program for elementary and middle school students. Forty-one of our ninth grade students enjoyed a preview class for the Honors 9 Social Studies class. The purpose of this two week pilot was to provide students with skills and understandings that would help them achieve at a high level in an Honors class. Through the generosity of one of our parents, some interested students participated in a STEM physics program that could serve as a model for a course or future summer program. Finally, for the third year, we offered a Summer Reading Club for students entering ninth grade so that they could complete their summer reading assignments in a “study group” type atmosphere.
During the summer, we developed or revised curriculum and otherwise planned for the students who will arrive at the schoolhouse doors in September. All of our schools are now wireless environments so that students will have easy access to the resources of the Internet. Technology was purchased so that our students and staff will have greater access to online tools and problem-solving environments. Finally, and as always, our O&M staff has worked tirelessly on improvement projects and to ready the schools for the fall.
We interviewed and hired a number of new teaching and support staff members during the months of July and August. Each is unique and brings a special skill set to our programs and students. All are motivated and pleased to work in Teaneck. Some changes in administrative assignments were made during the summer. Ms. Leslie Abrew was appointed Principal of Bryant School and Mr. Antoine Green was named Principal of Lowell School. These very fine educators bring resources to their position that will aid our students in both achieving at higher levels and making the social growth necessary for success in the years to come.
I am excited and optimistic about the year ahead and I hope that you are too. I want to extend an invitation for you to join me for the first “Sunday with the Superintendent” on October 13th in the Conference Room at Eugene Field School. This informal discussion provides me with an opportunity to hear your feedback, questions and concerns and also gives me a chance to share some programs and information.
All of the preparation, curriculum writing, facilities improvement and hiring that we do is meant to support the achievement of our students. I am starting the school year with a renewed commitment to making certain that our students succeed by any measure.
Further, I want to thank all of the parents and community members who work so hard to support and promote the activities and achievement of the students in our schools. I am always grateful for your participation and feedback.
I wish you all a most rewarding school year!
